Contraceptive Sponge

What is a contraceptive sponge?

The sponge is a round synthetic sponge pre-filled with spermicide. The sponge is placed inside the vagina, covering the cervix. It does not require a prescription and can be purchased any drugstore. There are two popular brands, the Today Sponge which was recently reintroduced into the US market after several years, and the Protectaid sponge available in Canada.

How does a sponge work?

The contraceptive sponge is worn inside the vagina, placed over the cervix. The sponge absorbs semen that is released during sexual intercourse. It also acts as a barrier, preventing sperm from crossing into the uterus. Most importantly, the sponge is filled with spermicide that kills any sperm it absorbs.
